Housing
I believe housing is a basic human right. Every Australian should have access to a safe and secure place to call home. However, after a decade of policy failure, our housing system has been left in crisis. For too many Australians, it’s become unaffordable to rent, let alone to a buy a home of their own. That’s why building more homes, and making housing more affordable, is our Government’s first priority.
National Housing Accord
The Federal Government has pioneered a national agreement with the States and Territories to build 1.2 million new well-located homes over the next 5 years.
The Agreement includes a $3.5 billion investment to fund enabling infrastructure such as roads, water and sewerage needed to be build more homes.
It includes $350 million over the next 5 years to support the delivery of 20,000 affordable homes in partnership with the States and Territories.
Housing Australia Future Fund
In 2023, we setup the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund to provide a secure, ongoing pipeline of funding for social and affordable housing.
The HAFF will disburse $500 million per year to support the construction and maintenance of 20,000 new social homes and 20,000 new affordable homes by the end of the decade.
5% Deposit Scheme
The 5% deposit scheme has already helped over 320,000 Australians buy their first home, including 50,000 essential workers.
Eligible households can buy a home with as little as a 5% deposit (or 2% for single parents or guardians) without having to pay Lenders Mortgage Insurance.
Help to Buy
Our Help to Buy shared equity scheme is supporting 40,000 Australians to buy a home.
Under the scheme, the Commonwealth will pay up to 40% of the purchase price, helping buyers break into the market with as little as a 2% deposit.
Tackling Homelessness
Our $1 billion HAFF Crisis and Transitional Fund is investing in emergency housing for young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and women and children fleeing domestic violence.
Our $60 million Youth Housing Incentive is helping Community Housing Providers taken on 4,000 additional young tenants under the age of 24 who are experiencing homelessness and are locked out of social housing.
Build to Rent
Our Build to Rent Scheme is incentivising the construction of thousands of new rental homes.
This includes a 1.5% increase in the Capital Works tax deduction, and a 15% reduction in final withholding tax.
